Pleasant Web Design

Version 1 completed in January of 2009

This design is minimalist, open, light, and easy to read. It emphasizes playful colors, and circular-rounded design elements. Note the subtle framing of page sections, using only a colored dot, a colored section header, and a splash of color at the bottom of the section.

Here are some additional design features:

A custom logo, featuring a scaled picture of my blindingly-yellow laptop.
A textured, blue background for the navigation/menu panel.
An atypical, right-side navigation panel.
Increased letter and word spacing to improve readability.
Favicon development.
All pages and styles are validated (XHTML 1.0 transitional) using the W3C validation service.

We began work on Kate's web site this past summer after many delays from her previous web designer. Working from two graphic-art files that provided the basic theme and viewing area, we enhanced the visual effects and brought the project to completion in a timely fashion. The main design challenge for this site was maintaining its attractiveness while working within a restricted viewing area (the design does not expand, so all text must appear in the limited viewing area).

Here are some additional design features:

Addition of a third color to the scheme (olive), expanding design options.
Use of Photoshop to add texture and a layered effect (leaves appearing both under and over the green, sub-title bar).
A new, rounded, main-menu bar, which uses color and varying backgrounds to communicate "current page" and "current focus/choice" to the user.
A submenu appearing below the title area, eliminating the need for drop-down menus.
Testimonials and FAQs pages implemented in single pages using web programming (JavaScript).
A contact form (this is a good example of the contact form included in our 5- and 10-page web-design packages).
Development of background graphics (vines and leaves) that operate within the naturalist theme of the site.
Favicon development.

Version 1 completed in August of 2006

As a professional who wanted a more striking web presence (I am a Life Consultant as well as a web designer), I decided to take the D.I.Y. approach back in 2006. Although I had written online Help for web applications for many years, this was the first site I designed and implemented.

Here are some additional design features:

A fixed, left-side, photographic collage, which is comprised of colorized stock photographs.
Rounded edges on boxes that contain information.
Use of CSS opacity (extent to which you can "see through" a page item) to create depth and a layered effect.
Search optimization that keeps me competitive with other counseling and coaching professionals in the Boston area (much of this work is not visible on the page).
Attractive drop-down menus that were implemented using web programming (JavaScript).
Adjusted letter and word spacing for readability.

Stay tuned! Pleasant Web Design will be redesigning this site in the winter of 2009! ;-)
